Home Game #14: Teddy Bear Toss

December 6th, 2014: Moose Jaw Warriors 7, Oil Kings 4

Edmonton dropped their last two games on the road this past week and looked to snap out of it against Moose Jaw last night. This marked the third meeting between the two teams, with Edmonton taking both of the prior meetings.

Andrew Koep had plans to get the teddy bears tossed as soon as possible last night, scoring just 51 seconds into the game to give the Oil Kings an early lead and bringing down the bears. The Oil Kings set a team record with 11,492 bears thrown to the ice.

The rest of the first was filled with penalties, a total of eight between the two teams. Brett Howden tied up the game for the Warriors on a 5-on-3 near the end of the first. Moose Jaw started the second with another 5-on-3 goal from Jack Rodewald and that is where things started to spiral out of control for the Oil Kings. Moose Jaw went on to score another four unanswered goals, putting them up 6-1. After the sixth goal, CHL Goaltender of the Week, Tristan Jarry was pulled and Patrick Dea stepped up to the plate in his place. Almost immediately after, Dysin Mayo tallied Edmonton’s second to cut the Warriors’ lead to four. The penalty-filled game finally reached its boiling point with a scrum breaking out as the buzzer rang to end the second. Nothing came of it but minors for Mayo and Spenser Jensen. Oddly enough, we would not see another penalty for the rest of the game. In his second game back from injury, Ben Carroll got the third started for the Oil Kings, putting them within three. However, Tanner Eberle’s second of the night returned a comfortable lead back to the visitors. Mayo also had his second of the night late in the game, however it was not enough to put Edmonton back into the game, and they fell to the Warriors, 7-4.

Ashton Sautner had a helper on Mayo’s second goal, extending his current points streak to 12 games. His current streak is the longest by a defenseman, and the third longest streak in the league this season (tied with Nick Merkley of the Kelowna Rockets and Jaedon Descheneau of the Kootenay Ice).

Also worth noting, Branden Klatt had his WHL debut tonight for the Oil Kings as an affiliated player. He was called up from the Moose Jaw Generals (Saskatchewan Midget AAA), and ironically made his debut against his hometown team. He was a -2 on the night.

Edmonton is back in action on Wednesday night as the Blazers come to town.
